2D Motion Estimation in the Extraction of 3D Motion and Structure of Rigid Objects
International Workshop on Synthetic-Natural Hybrid Coding and 3D Imaging (IWSNHC3DI'99), Santorini, Greece
ABSTRACT
Twodimensionalmotion estimation is a task that emerges in several fields of research, such as cod ing and compression, contentbased video retrieval and computer vision. Various algorithms on mo tion estimation can be found in the literature fo cusing either on accuracy or low computational cost. Present work investigates the efficient ap plication of nonparametric motion estimation techniques in 3D reconstruction of rigid objects from their projections. Three well known mo tion estimation techniques are employed, namely block matching, generalized block matching and optical flow methods, and the resulting motion fields are given as input to one of the existing 3D reconstruction algorithms. At the same time, local confidence criteria are defined for the 2D motion vectors in order to select these estimates that allow 3D motion and structure estimation.
